The Play About the Cat

Written by Vicki Riba Koestler

There is one simple pleasure that’s eluded Joan Gerson for her entire life: cat ownership. Now, while time remains, she wants to remedy that. So Joan and her daughter have gone to the local animal shelter, where Joan developed an instant bond with a fuzzy, gray kitten. Only things seem to have changed at the shelter—you can't just take your chosen animal home; you first have to pass muster with a pet adoption counselor during a home visit. When fractious family members burst into Joan's house at just the wrong time, their behavior threatens to put the kibosh on the whole adoption plan. Will the kitten remain only a precious image stored in a digital camera?
